Apr 28 | I love my Dad
“Oh, all the money that e’er I spent,
I spent it in good company;
And all the harm that e’er I’ve done,
Alas! It was to none but me.
And all I’ve done for want of wit
to memory now I can’t recall,
so fill to me the parting glass.
Good night, and joy be with you all.
Oh, all the comrades that e’er I had,
they’re sorry for my going away;
And all the family that e’er I had
would wish me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot
that I should rise and you should not,
I’ll gently rise and I’ll softly call:
‘Good night, and joy be with you all.'”
(“The Parting Glass”, trad. Celtic, lyrics slightly adapted by me).
I managed to sing this at my Dad’s funeral yesterday. I only wish I had gotten the chance to teach it to him.
